J@YS (Journalists @ Your Service) is a Brussels-based press help centre that offers professional advice, assistance and services for journalists covering Brussels and the EU. J@YS is based in the International Press Centre, Résidence Palace, in the heart of the European Quarter and convenient for all the major EU institutions in Brussels.
Services include:
* Information for journalists and the press in Brussels and Belgium.
* Regular briefings, debates and events of interest to journalists. For example our Residence Rendezvous events enable journalists and correspondents to meet opinion-formers and others who make the news and exchange information in an informal social setting.
* Updated diary of news events for journalists and media.
* Navigation through sources of information available in the city.
* Access to the work of major national and international political institutions.
* Additional advice on legal, financial, professional and union issues.
Why are we here?
Each year thousands of journalists and media people come to Brussels to cover some of the biggest stories on the news agenda. For newcomers, however, it is not easy to hit the ground running. Brussels has many pitfalls - rules about accreditation, a labyrinthine maze of political and corporate corridors, and some baffling Belgian regulations about residence and taxation.
J@YS was created in order to help make life a little easier for visitors and newcomers, as well as the more experienced correspondents, by acting as a central resource for all the information and knowledge already held by the more experienced press.
The centre is a partnership between several key press organisations in the city. They include:
* EJC (European Journalism Centre).
* IFJ (International Federation of Journalists).
* International Press Centre Résidence Palace,
* API (Association de La Presse Internationale).
* NUJ Brussels (local branch of the NUJ (the British and Irish Journalists’ union).
* AGJPB/AVBB (the Belgian Journalists’ Union).
‘Reporting Brussels’ - the journalists’ guide to the EU
J@YS has also, with the support of the European Commission, produced a handy pocketbook called ‘Reporting Brussels - The Journalists’ Guide to the Capital of Europe’. This small but useful publication contains background information on the Belgian and European institutions, practical advice on accreditation, housing and taxation as well as an extensive directory of useful contacts. This free-of-charge printed handbook is available from our office, and can also be downloaded as an electronic pdf file direct from our website.
If you have any questions or wish to obtain further information about J@YS or the services we offer, please do not hesitate to contact us.
